From the second we gave Saxon John Brown a cheque for the deposit on our loft conversion, the service we received from them dwindled to almost nothing. Having approved the plans drawn up by them, we were told that they would sort out the planning application and that we would have a 'build slot' that would commence in the last week of May. As the end of May approached, we rang them to find out exactly when they were starting / what access they would need etc to be told that they hadn't submitted the planning application yet and that there were no build slots available until July or August. 'Whoever told you that your work would commence in May didn't know what they were talking about' I was told by Martin Start, a director of SJB, as though it were somehow ludicrous that I would have believed something told to me by one of his employees. After many months of unreturned phone calls and broken promises of 'being in touch next week', our planning application was finally submitted. Despite having told them on numerous occasions that we live in a Conservation Area, our planning application was refused by the council - based on the grounds that we were in a Conservation Area. We decided that we did not wish to proceed with an alternative loft conversion design that would have potentially satisfied the council (which would have involved lowering the ceiling on the first floor and shrinking the master bedroom to make way for the staircase to the loft - a radically different approach to what SJB had originally advised us on). They did not return any of our deposit. I would not recommend using Saxon John Brown for loft conversion work.

Hopeless. From plans which turned out to be flawed from the word go, to a make-it-up-as-you-go-along approach to the build, to the still unresolved issue of the final certficate, I just would not trust SJB to run a bath let alone a significant build project.
